Enjoy Taisho Romanticism and the Taste of Yonezawa - Local Cuisine and Quality Time at the Count Uesugi's Residence

Hello, travel and food lovers. I would like to introduce you to a restaurant in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, which is well equipped with class and taste, "Count Uesugi's Residence". Located at 1-3-60 Marunouchi, Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, 992-0052, this is the place where you can enjoy Yonezawa's local cuisine and brand beef "Yonezawa Beef" in a historic building.

Luxury in a historic mansion

The building of Count Uesugi's residence was constructed in 1896 (Meiji 29) as the main residence of Count Shigenori, the 14th generation of the Uesugi family, the former lord of the Yonezawa domain. Later destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt in 1925 (Taisho 14) as a residence made entirely of cypress with a gabled roof. It is now designated as a national tangible cultural property.

Dining at a place with such historical and architectural background is not just a "meal," but includes a moment of "traveling through time. As you pass through the entrance gate, the tranquility and appearance of the grounds, including the garden, already evoke an "extraordinary" mode.

Atmosphere and access to the restaurant

The Count Uesugi's Residence is a 10-minute drive from JR Yonezawa Station or a 5-minute walk from the Uesugi Shrine bus stop. The building is a spacious Japanese-style mansion, and the interior, furnishings, corridors, and garden all have a sense of “elegance” and “nostalgia,” making you feel as if you have been invited to a mansion.

There are approximately 80 seats, with table seating and chair use also available, and the Japanese-style room and table style is a great way to spend a relaxing time. Private rooms are also available for special occasions. A coffee shop space is also provided, which is easy to use for after-dinner tea time.

Menu Attraction: Both Local Cuisine and Yonezawa Beef

The attraction of the Count Uesugi's Residence is that you can taste both local cuisine inherited from Yonezawa tradition and famous brand Yonezawa beef at the same time. The official menu, "Oyoritate," includes everything from local cuisine "menzen ryori" to luxurious beef dishes such as Yonezawa beef steak and sukiyaki.

For example, the "Yuki-no-zen" menu (about 2,750 yen) offers a variety of local delicacies, such as cold soup, carp stewed with carp, Yonezawa beef stewed with sweet potato, shiohiki sushi, rice cooked with green vegetables, chrysanthemum miso soup, and more... all in one dish.
On the other hand, Yonezawa beef dishes such as fillet steak, sirloin steak, and sukiyaki are also available, and are also suitable for “special occasion meals.

Lunch customers can also enjoy deeply flavored local dishes and the atmosphere of the mansion at a moderate price.

A memorable meal that I actually tasted.

I visited during lunch time and had the “Yuki-no-zen” menu. First of all, the view of the garden from the seats, the wooden transoms, and the calm Japanese setting heightened my awareness of the "special place".

Each dish was filled with "Yonezawa-ness. The Yonezawa beef stew with taro, konnyaku, and beef was rich in flavor and made me realize that "this is what local cuisine is all about. The "items that I usually don't eat but would like to encounter on my trip," such as salted sushi and chrysanthemum miso soup, were all on the menu, and I was highly satisfied with them.

After dinner, the time spent at the coffee shop enjoying matcha green tea and Japanese sweets while gazing at the garden is also very special. I had no complaints as a place to "take a break" during my trip.
